6 Stasi
* * *The Stasi – short for Staatssicherheitsdienst – was the secret service of the former East Germany. The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (or MfS) was established in 1950 and disbanded in 1989 before re-unification, as it was the most hated institution in the land and was regarded as the embodiment of a repressive regime. The Stasi built up a vast network of both full-time and unofficial collaborators (IMs), some of whom held prominent positions in West Germany. With their help the Stasi compiled dossiers on over 6 million people.
